Description:

Early French view of bird nests on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia based on the larger engraving by Pierre Antoin eMarchais (1763-1859) and Adrien Taunay (1803-1828).

The French expedition led by Louis de Freycinet had anchored at Shark Bay on 12th September 1818 where a boat party was sent to Dirk Hartog Island to collect the famous pewter plate which Freycinet had seen in 1801 whilst serving aboard the earlier Baudin expedition. The ship and crew remained at Shark Bay for two weeks and three views recorded the visit were first issued in the published accounts; Freycinet, L.  Voyage autour du Monde … Historique.
