Description:
A superbly hand coloured example of the earliest issue of Montanus’s c.17th map of Batavia, identified by the date 1669 in the title banner.
In 1619, Jan Pieterszoon Coen, the then Governor-General of the Moluccas for the Dutch East Indies company (VOC), established Batavia as the Company’s headquarters. The VOC had prospered from its monopoly of the lucrative spice trade and this success was reflected in the houses and lifestyle of the company’s governors in Batavia. This plan of Batavia was based on Jacob van Meurs larger plan which was subsequently copied by various publishers. Later editions can be identified by a number of changes; the change of date, the addition of, ‘‘Plan de la Ville et du Chateau de BATAVIA en l’Isle de Java. 1679.’, above the banner title, erasure of the engravers initials and the re-engraving of the ships and sea. Additionally, the inset view on later versions was completely re-engraved.

Arnoldus Montanus (1625 - 1683)
Montanus was a Dutch teacher and author. He published books on theology, history, and geography of both the Netherlands and far-away countries. Montanus, a Latinised form of van den Berg or van Bergen, was born in Amsterdam and studied theology at Leiden University. He became a minister in Schellingwoude in 1653 and in Schoonhoven in 1667, where he also became headmaster of the Latin School. He died in Schoonhoven. His most famous book is De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld.
