Description:
One of Lionel Lindsay’s best known woodcuts of Goats, signed in pencil at lower left from the edition of 100.
The effect of gentleness is created by placing the kid in a confiding relationship with the dominant figure of the billy goat. Even so it is a composition based more on relativities of harsh angles than on their curves, although Lindsay does allow these goats some curved lines in their construction. The angularity of the goats’ bony anatomy is stressed by the position of their background. They are placed between the harsh downward thrusting rocks and in front of a dark valley. But these goats are creatures of light and domestic contentment, eating their way through nature, not defying it like Satan or the other wild goats. Mendelssohn
