Antique Architectural and Design Prints
This category brings together original antique prints across the full range of architectural and design subjects — building surveys and elevations, the classical orders, interior design schemes, ornamental art, decorative pattern and the visual vocabulary of the applied arts from the 16th through the 19th century. These works represent the intersection of architecture and design at their most productive, documenting both the theoretical foundations of European architectural thought and the practical application of design principles across centuries of building, decoration and craft production.
Architectural prints encompass the full spectrum of illustrated architectural publication, from the Renaissance treatises that first codified the classical orders through to the detailed building surveys, country house portfolios and picturesque architectural views of the 19th century. The publications of Palladio, Serlio, Vignola and their successors established the visual vocabulary of classical architecture in printed form, while 18th and 19th-century publishers documented the great buildings of every European tradition in engravings of high quality. Views of ancient Roman ruins, Renaissance palaces, baroque churches, English country houses and French chateaux appear alongside the theoretical and measured drawings that informed the practice of architects across the period.
Design prints extend the architectural tradition into the applied and decorative arts, documenting the ornamental vocabulary — the friezes, cartouches, mouldings, ironwork, furniture, textiles and decorative objects — that defined visual culture at every level of ambition and expense. The great pattern books of the 17th and 18th centuries — the works of Jean Berain, Daniel Marot, Thomas Chippendale and their contemporaries — circulated design ideas across national boundaries and craft traditions, shaping the decorative arts of the entire European world.
Interior design prints document the treatment of rooms and spaces in the great houses of Europe and Britain, recording schemes of decoration that combined architectural elements, furniture, textiles and ornament in comprehensive visual programmes. These prints, produced for the use of craftsmen and patrons as well as for the general market of design-conscious collectors, offer an invaluable record of how European interiors actually looked across the great centuries of decorative achievement.
Antique architectural and design prints are collected for their historical documentation of the built and decorated environment, their quality as graphic works and their continued relevance to architects, designers and collectors who draw on historical precedent in their own creative practice.
