Antique Anatomical Prints from Various Medical and Scientific Publications
This category brings together original antique anatomical prints drawn from a range of medical and scientific publications beyond the dedicated Quain and Wilson category available elsewhere in the collection. These works represent the breadth of the anatomical illustration tradition across four centuries of European medical publishing, from the Renaissance publications that established the modern tradition of anatomical illustration through to the specialist medical atlases and illustrated textbooks of the 19th century.
The tradition of European anatomical illustration encompasses a wide range of publishers, illustrators and subject approaches. Beyond the landmark works of Vesalius, Bidloo and the major anatomical atlases, a substantial body of anatomical illustration was produced for medical textbooks, surgical manuals, midwifery guides, physiological works and the illustrated publications of medical societies and hospital schools that proliferated from the 17th century onwards. These works — less celebrated than the great anatomical atlases but no less significant in terms of their practical medical function — produced plates of variable but often considerable artistic quality that document the transmission of anatomical knowledge across the period of European medical professionalisation.
Comparative anatomy — the systematic study of anatomical structures across different species — generated its own illustrated tradition, with publications by John Hunter, Georges Cuvier and their successors producing plates that connected the study of human anatomy to the broader field of natural history and the emerging disciplines of evolutionary biology. These comparative anatomical plates, depicting the skeletal and muscular structures of animals alongside their human counterparts, occupy the intersection of medical illustration and natural history art.
Dental, ophthalmic and other specialist anatomical illustrations represent the growing differentiation of medical practice across the 19th century, with dedicated illustrated publications serving the needs of increasingly specialised professional communities. These specialist anatomical prints offer collectors access to areas of medical illustration that have received less attention than the mainstream anatomical tradition while carrying their own historical and documentary significance.
Antique anatomical prints from various publications are collected for their scientific and historical interest, their documentary value as records of the development of medical knowledge, and their quality as examples of scientific illustration across a wide range of period publications and printing techniques.
