Antique Topographical Views and Prints of the Americas
This category brings together original antique views, engravings and lithographs depicting the American continents — North, Central and South America — produced by European and American publishers across three centuries of exploration, settlement and nation-building. These works document the landscapes, cities, natural features and peoples of the Western Hemisphere as observed and recorded from the earliest European contact through to the 19th century.
Antique views of North America encompass the eastern seaboard settlements of the colonial period, the cities of the United States as they developed through the 18th and 19th centuries, the frontier landscapes of the expanding interior, and the natural scenery that attracted artists and illustrators throughout the period. Views of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and other major centres were published in abundance, as were panoramic landscapes and scenes of natural spectacle.
Central America and the Caribbean produced a distinctive body of topographical imagery, including views of ports and harbours significant to Atlantic trade, plantation landscapes and the dramatic natural scenery of the tropics. These prints appeared in travel narratives, geographical works and illustrated periodicals intended for audiences with commercial, scholarly and leisure interests in the region.
South American subjects are represented by views of major colonial and post-independence cities, river and mountain scenery, and the landscapes encountered by 19th-century travellers, naturalists and artists. The publication of Alexander von Humboldt’s illustrated travel writings generated significant interest in South American topography and natural history, stimulating a body of print production that captured the continent’s extraordinary variety of environment and culture.
These original antique views of the Americas are collected for their historical depth, geographic variety and the insight they provide into how the Western Hemisphere was understood and visualised by contemporaries across several centuries. As authentic period works on paper, they offer collectors a direct connection to the visual culture of exploration and settlement.
