Scarce map of Asia showing Australia with an imaginary southern coast but with Bass Strait named, “Straits of Basses”. In West Australia and Northern Territory Dutch discoveries are noted with the year. As usual the first discovery in 1606 by Janz is not noted. The east coast is mapped according to Cook.

William Darton (1755-1819)
English mapmaker, engraver, printseller, bookseller and publisher, born in Tottenham son of John Darton inn keeper. Apprenticed (Clothworkers) as an engraver to Thomas Dent of Ball Alley. Discharged from his master by a judgement in the Lord Mayor’s Court 16 May 1773 and turned over to Francis Baker, Citizen & Haberdasher to August 1775. He produced numerous maps and atlases, including Darton’s New Miniature Atlas and Complete Atlas of the English Channel.
