Description:

Rare plan of Copenhagen with decorative title cartouche and key indicating places of interest including the Citadel and the King’s Residence. Copenhagen was founded in the eleventh century and grew into an important trading centre due to its superb harbour and proximity to the herring fisheries. The city was significantly enlarged under King Christian IV during the early seventeenth century with the addition of new city districts, modern fortifications and magnificent edifices designed to enhance the king’s prestige. This plan shows the city prior to the large fires of 1795, which destroyed much of the medieval part of town.

From Andrews, A Collection of Plans of the Capital Cities of Europe, and some Remarkable cities in Asian, Africa & America: with a description of their most remarkable Buildings, Trade etc

Mapmaker:

John Andrews (1766 – 1798)

Surveyor, cartographer, mapseller and engraver of London. This early town plan is from his A collection of plans of the capital cities of Europe, and some remarkable cities in Asia, Africa & America: with a description of their most remarkable buildings, trade, situation, extent. Andrews’ superbly engraved and embellished series of town plans are usually found issued uncoloured, this set however has FULL ORIGINAL HAND COLOURING. We have not been able to locate another set with hand colouring such as ours, so it’s probable that this set was either coloured by the publisher from specific request from a purchaser, or the purchaser had it coloured after publication.
