Description:
C.18th map of present day Tunisia. The Sea of Africa shown at the top of the map refers to the part of the Mediterranean just off coast of Tunisia. The map also shows Numidia, a kingdom located in what is now eastern Algeria, as well as the islands of Sicily and Malta. It provides a scale in Roman miles, and the longitudes still roughly correlating with Ptolemaic reckoning. At longitude 29, latitude 34.5 lies the Lotophagitis Island (island of the lotus eaters) is noted which is present day Djerba. Many believe this is the island Homer referred to in the Odyssey, although in reality there is no lotus plant which is widely consumed on Djerba.
