“Tuesday, April 3, the Pearl, belonging to the Queensland Government, arrived at Port Moresby, with Mr. H. M. Chester, police magistrate from Thursday Island, on board. At 10 o’clock the next morning Mr. Chester formally annexed New Guinea, by reading a proclamation and hoisting the Union Jack. “

Durand was a draughtsman of French heritage and a well known wood engraver whose prolific works appeared in The Graphic over many years. He also worked for L’Univers Illustré. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1873.
