Description:

Rare, c.18th hand coloured engraved Italian map of Sardinia with an elaborate scene at bottom left.

A finely engraved map of Sardinia, depicting the island with its mountainous interior, numerous rivers and principal towns and settlements. The relief is represented by clusters of shaded mountains, while the rivers are prominently engraved and the coastline lightly hatched. Towns are distinguished according to their importance, and the two principal regions of Logudoro and Cagliari are delineated by dotted boundaries. Two elaborate figurative cartouches add a decorative element to the map.

The map is based upon the geographical work of Giovanni Antonio Magini and has a compilation of French and Italian cartographic sources used by Albrizzi.

From: Albrizzi, Atlante Novissimo del Sigr. Guglielmo de L’Isle, Venezia. (volume Secondo MDCCL-1750)

Giovambattista Albrizzi (1698 - 1777)

Albrizzi was a publisher, patron, collector and one of the great figures of eighteenth-century Venetian intellectual and cultural life. Although Venice had been the centre of the European map trade during the sixteenth century, its importance was greatly diminished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as Dutch and German publishers became increasingly dominant.
