D’Entrecasteaux in the ships, La Recherche and L’Esp�rance under Huon de Kermadec, sailed in 1791 sailed via the Cape of Good Hope, along the southern Australia coast from Cape Leeuwin easterly, and then into the Pacific. With orders not only to search for La Perouse but to also make scientific discoveries and to chart the coasts. They were instructed to the accuracy of the exisiting earlier Dutch and d’Apres charts of the South Indian and South Pacific Oceans. The hydrographer on the expedition was Beautemps-Beaupre.
