Carte Reduite de l’Ocean Oriental Septentrional, qui Contient une partie des Cotes d’Afrique, de l’Arabie, de la Perse, et celles de l’Indostan

Large scale c.18th chart of the Indian Ocean, extending from Arabia to India and Sri Lanka, published in Mannevillette’s, Le Neptune oriental (Oriental Pilot), the most highly regarded pilot for the Eastern trade for both French and English ships.

Note there are two versions of this chart, with changes and totally different sizes, this is the first issue and the larger of the two versions. The other smaller version is identified by;

1. The title has been moved to top left and its place, Partie de L’Indostan.
2. The chart has been reduce on the right side from 87 degrees to 79 1/2 degrees
3. On the east coast of India the following have been added; Pescherie, Tanjajour while Orixa has been removed
4. The naming of, Isle de Ceylan has been reversed
5. The Isles Maldives has been turned at 90 degrees.
6. The naming of, Le Isles Laquedives, has been changed to Archipel des Laquedives
7. A compass rose has been added at centre.
8. The naming of, Perse has been changed to, Cote de Perse.
9. Both advertisements have been removed.
10. Naming of, The Cote d’Arabie Heureuse has been changed to, Cote D’Arabie.

From about 1735 Mannevillette had set about collecting detailed charts of the known coasts from Africa to Australia and which with the financial support of the Comapne des Indes and the Academie des Sciences, he published his ground breaking sea atlas, Le Neptune Oriental in 1745. This first issue comprised only twenty five charts, superior to any previously available and consequently quickly became the indispensable maritime atlas for ship owners, captains and pilots engaged in the Southeast Asian sea routes. In 1775 d’Apres issued the second edition of Le Neptune Oriental, greatly expanded to approximately 69 charts which Mannevillette had applied his advances in navigational techniques which he had refined in the intervening 30 years.  There is no standard collation of the the second edition with the number of maps varying in atlases held by major institutional libraries. Mannevillette kept updating the charts and eventually this required a supplement, published posthumously in 1781 and reissued in 1797.
