Scarce c.17th engraving of Castle Sant Angelo, Rome. The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant’Angelo, is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, on the Tiber, Rome. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle

Marco Sadeler (1614–1660) This series capitalised on the renewed interest in the monuments of classical antiquity which reached its climax in sixteenth century Rome. Marco Sadeler, whose name appears on the plates, was an engraver and print seller in Prague in the early 1600’s and probably the nephew of Aegidius.
