Description:
Rare lithographed chart of King Island dated 1855.
Official calls for the lighting of Bass Strait, to improve the safe passage of east-west shipping, were first made in 1841 and resulted in the approval for the construction for lights on Swan (1845), Goose (1846) Islands in Banks Strait, the subsidiary passage between the Furneaux Group and the north eastern shores of Tasmania. In the same year, the Select Committee on Light Houses appointed by the New South Wales Legislative Council recommended the establishment of lights at the northern end of King Island and on Deal Island at the southern end of the Kent Group.
