Description:
Early view of Coalcliff colliery which was officially opened in 1878. George Bass had examined the area in 1797 after survivors of the wrecked ship Sydney Cove reported finding coal there. The jetty was built in 1878 but was partially destroyed in June that year, only to be rebuilt in 1881. In 1904, the jetty was once again damaged, with some 150 feet being lost, before being put out of use for the shipping of coal in 1912. The picturesque township of Coalcliff was built to house the miners from the nearby colliery.
