Description:

Rare c.19th hand coloured engraving depicting the collision between the Sylphide and Ballina in 1877.

The Sylphide was built in 1852 in Bremen, Germany, she was 296 ton wooden barquentine registered in Melbourne and used for the transport of coastal cargo of timber bark. On the 16th of June 1877, on a trip from Portland Bay to Sydney, the vessel collided with the Ballina 1.5 miles off Dee Why Head, Sydney and sank. The Sylphide was mastered by James Peo with 9 crew members and owned by Messers Pigott.

J.W.C. - James Waltham Curtis (1839 - 1901)

Curtis was a painter, illustrator and photographic colourist. A regular exhibitor at the Black and White exhibitions, Victorian Academy of Arts, in the 1880s. painter, illustrator and photographic colourist, was born in Devonshire. He had worked on the London Graphic and Sketcher before coming to Victoria, probably with the goldrush. In Melbourne he worked first as a colourist for Johnstone, O’Shannessy and Co., then as an illustrator on the Illustrated Australian News succeeding O.R. Campbell. He often signed his works with the monogram.
