Large scale map of Korea and Japan from Philip’s New General Atlas. Includes a note at bottom left from Captain Basil Hall’s Account of a Voyage of Discovery to the West Coast of Corea and the Great Loo-Choo Island in the Japan Sea (1818), which was one of the first European descriptions of Korea. Hall commanded the sloop Lyra, which accompanied the HMS Alceste during its exploration of the region. The Alceste had been captured from the French by the British in 1806.
