Description:
Double hemisphere polar projection with Australia shown with an east coast extending from Tasmania and joined to the Solomon Islands. This concept was promoted by the French School of Cartography. The first map to show this exaggerated extension was Gilles Robert de Vaugondy 1853, who was one of the leading exponents of this school of thought. The misconception lasted until James Cook chart of the east coast in 1770 was published.

Mapmaker:
Louis Brion De La Tour (fl 1756-1803)
Beyond the fact that Brion was an engineer by profession and held the post of Ingenieur-Geographe du Roi, little is known of his career. He published a wide range of statistical works and a number of atlases, published by the well known French mapmaker Louis Charles Desnos (1725-1805).
