Map of Denmark with views of Copenhagen and Schleswig, the coat of arms of Denmark in the top right and a view of two peasants near Copenhagen. Schleswig and Holstein were disputed areas with the German states and Denmark fighting two wars over the issue. This map was published shortly after the First Schleswig War which resulted in Schleswig and Holstein remaining possessions of Denmark. A second war was fought over the issue in 1864 and resulted in the regions being ceded to Prussia.
John Tallis (1817 - 1876)
Bookseller and publisher of maps and atlases who produced the famous atlas of maps, 'The Illustrated Atlas, and modern history of the World'. The maps were drawn by John Rapkin (1813-1899) and were beautifully decorated with vignette views and local fauna and flora of the areas depicted. John Rapkin (1813-1899) Rapkin was a mapmaker and engraver who is best known for his superb engraving on John Tallis publications.
