Also known as Jaques Joosten or Jacob Joosten Tolck, was a c.17th Dutch author and translator, best known for De kleyne wonderlijcke werelt, published in Amsterdam in 1649. Little is known about his life, and key details such as his birth and death dates remain uncertain. He was active in Amsterdam in the mid-1600s and is sometimes thought to have been born around the early seventeenth century, possibly circa 1613, though this is not confirmed. Joosten described himself as a “tolk” (interpreter), which is central to his identity in the work. In the preface to De kleyne wonderlijcke werelt, he claims to have travelled widely and learned several languages across Europe and beyond, positioning himself as a mediator between different cultures and places. His main work, De kleyne wonderlijcke werelt (1649), combines travel writing, geographical description, and moral reflection. It surveys major regions and kingdoms such as the Ottoman Empire, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, England, and parts of the New World like Brazil, presenting a compact overview of the world rather than a precise cartographic atlas.
