Although Bunting, had never actually visited the Holy Land, he produced an original work by recasting sacred scripture into a Reissbuch” (Noonan); “the most complete summary of the knowledge of that day concerning the geography of the biblical events” (Van der Heijden, p. 55).

Heinrich Bunting (1545 - 1606)
Bunting was a Protestant pastor and theologian, born in Hannover, Germany, in 1545 and best known for Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (Travel book through Holy Scripture) first published in 1581 which contained a number woodcut maps. He studied theology at the University of Wittenberg graduating in 1569 and became a Protestant pastor in Lemgo. He was dismissed in 1575 and moved to Gronau an der Leine. In 1591 he was appointed superintendent in Goslar. When a dispute arose over his teachings in 1600 he was dismissed and retired from the ministry. He spent the rest of his life as a private citizen in Hannover.
