Description:
The finest colour printed engravings made of New Zealand subjects, from the very rare account recording the voyage of La Coquile under the command of Louis Isidore Duperrey (1786-1865) and his deputy Jules Dumont D’Urville during the years 1822-1825. La Coquille visited the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, from 3rd to 17th April 1824.
View from the water of several fenced in houses, a large Red Ensign flying from a flagpole, three men working near the shore, the mission boat with five men aboard, in Kerikeri.
Based on an ink and wash drawing by Chazal, held in the Library, ref. no. C-082-093, in its turn based on an ink and wash drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1824 visit to the Bay of Islands. The original drawing lacks one of the men working on the foreshore and the buildings on the skyline appear to be tents, rather than houses, but the central buildings are essentially the same. The original drawing is in the Bibliotheque du Service Historique de la Marine, Vincennes, Paris.

Chazal was a French painter and engraver. He studied under Misbach, Bidauld, and Van Spaendonck, and became Professor of Iconography at the Jardin des Plantes.
