Important account of the inland exploration of north west Australia. Grey’s expeditions were the first to explore the Kimberley’s and report favorably on the quality for the land, which encouraged settlers to the area. He was also the first European to record the Aboriginal rock art known as Wandjina paintings. The expedition embarked on H.M.S. Beagle in July of 1837 arriving off the coast of Australia in December. Octavo, two volumes, 20 lithographed plates (6 coloured) and 2 rare maps of the “District of Glenelg, on the North-Western Coast of Australia”, and “West Coast of Australia, from Swan River to Sharks Bay”, both with routes marked in red, mounted on fine linen (now bound at each end of the first volume. Early gilt-decorated half calf and marbled papered boards slightly worn, with trifling loss to the head of one spine, maps, plates and some adjacent pages foxed, with some offsetting to the maps, a very good set, bound without the advertisements. Small name-label of F. and C. Holbech.
