Description:
Very detailed German map of New Guinea with a number of insets and showing good inland information.
The north east portion is named ‘Kaiser Wilhelms Land’ and was the first part of the German colonial empire. It was a protectorate from 1884 until 1914 when it fell to Australian forces following the outbreak of the First World War. In 1876, Italian explorer, Luigi D’Albertis, was the first person to successfully attempt the exploration of the Fly Riverand travelling 900 km into the interior, in his steamer, Neva.
