Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745 - 1824)

Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745–1824) was one of Italy's foremost eighteenth-century cartographers, engravers and geographers. Born in Rome, he established himself as a highly skilled copperplate engraver before turning to mapmaking, where he combined scientific accuracy with the refined decorative style characteristic of the late Enlightenment. Although sharing the famous surname of the French Cassini family of astronomers and geodesists, he was not directly associated with their cartographic enterprise.

Cassini is best known for his large-scale maps of the Papal States and the Italian peninsula. His most important achievement was the Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale, first published in Rome in 1792 and expanded in subsequent editions. The atlas was among the finest geographical works produced in Italy during the period, comprising detailed maps of the world, Europe and the principal regions of Italy. His maps drew upon the latest geographical information available from contemporary European surveys while maintaining the elegant engraving and clear typography for which Italian cartography was renowned.

In addition to atlas production, Cassini engraved numerous regional and thematic maps, plans and scientific illustrations. His work reflects the transition from the decorative traditions of the seventeenth century to the increasingly precise and scientific cartography of the nineteenth century. His maps were widely used by scholars, travellers and government officials and remained in circulation for many years after their first publication.
