Detailed map of Kafiristan in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, which includes the cities of Kabul and Jalalabad. Named after the Kafirs, a fiercely independent people who resisted conversion to Islam until the 1890s, Kafiristan literally means the “land of the infidels.” This map was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Geographic Society shortly after the Second Anglo-Afghan War, 1878-1880.
