Description:
Scarce map of north eastern Northern Territory, extending from Stanley Wessel’s Islands in the north to Edward’s Island in the south and King River in the west to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the east, showing county boundaries, hundred and telegraph lines.
From the first atlas of the continent issued in Australia and the only series of maps of the nineteenth century to show details of the Northern Territory counties.
John Sands (1818 - 1873)
In 1837 Sands came to Sydney for health reasons and with stationery valued at £500 he set up business in George Street. In 1848 he took over a shop front next to the General Post Office. By 1870 as stationers, booksellers, printers and account book manufacturers the firm was one of the largest of its kind in Australia and in that year won prizes for printing and book production at the Inter Colonial Exhibition in Sydney.
