Description:

Scarce folding, early issue of this fabulous and informative “Tourist” map, extending from Newcastle to the Victorian border and west as far as Cootamundra.

Wonderfully embellished with and ornate colour title, a list of Notes in its own decorative panel, an Index at lower right listing other available maps of New South Wales and a bouquet of native flowers stating: Wild Flowers Yours to enjoy not to destroy.

Bound in contemporary green cloth with pictorial colour label, super octavo. Still retaining it’s cloth pull out tab.

The colonial mapping of New South Wales initially recorded the progress of explorations, opening up new country for economic investment.  C.20th maps such as this record are he first records of the social change and new phenomena of local tourism. The map clearly illustrates that there was a large use of motor vehicles for holidaying around the state. The map includes locations of “Streams stocked with Trout & Bass”. An extensive key noting condition of roads, accommodation, camping grounds, petrol supplies, telephones and even “Aero Landing Grounds”. There are numerous interesting notations at various locations including one at Seven Mile Beach “Motor Racing Course”.

This is one of four Tourist maps that the Department of Lands produced as shown by the inset below the ‘Notes’ listing the four maps;

1. North Eastern
2. South Eastern
3. Central Southern
4. Central Northern

These maps are all rare due to their ephemeral nature.
