French world map on Mercator’s Projection with Australia positioned at centre and shown with a completed southern coast. The first map to show this coast was Louis Freycinet’s chart published in in the quarto volume of the official accounts of the Baudin voyage in 1807. The same map was then added to the folio atlas published in 1811. Mathew Flinders famous chart of the continent wasn’t published until 1814.
Consequently this world map is an early record of the charting of the Australian southern coast.
The map has a decorative title embellished with mapmaking and sailing instruments .

Conrad Malte-Brun (1775-1826)
Danish geographer born in Jutland, established himself in Paris in 1800. A geographer of considerable repute his work was continued by his son Victor. They produced an atlas,“Geographie Universelle Ancienne et Modern”.
