Description:

Scarce c.19th hand coloured engraving of Davies and Steel’s drapery shop, 117-119 Brunswick St, Fitzroy, Melbourne.

The firm was established in 1850 and became one of Fitzroy’s principal drapery businesses, trading from this site from the mid c.19th. By 1896 the business had expanded into the adjoining premises at 121–123 Brunswick Street, giving it a frontage of approximately 70 feet and a depth of 110 feet. The substantial building was constructed in the Italian Renaissance manner, with large plate-glass windows designed to display the merchandise.
