Scare, c.19th hand coloured engraving of the pioneering, Mephan Ferguson’s Glasgow Carlton iron works.

Scottish-born engineer and manufacturer Mephan Ferguson (1843–1931). Ferguson arrived in Victoria in 1854 and established himself as an engineer and ironfounder, becoming particularly noted for the manufacture of wrought-iron bridges, structural ironwork and railway equipment. The Glasgow Carlton Iron Works, situated in Carlton, produced a wide range of heavy engineering work and became one of the better-known ironworking establishments in Melbourne during the later c.19th. Ferguson’s firm was responsible for numerous bridges and other substantial engineering structures throughout Victoria and interstate.
