Description:

The rare second edition of this important directory on Pacific navigation by the English geographer and hydrographer Alexander George Findlay (1812-75). Provenance the G & N Ingleton with bookplate on inside of front cover. Published by Richard Holmes Laurie, London, 1870. green cloth, 2nd Edition. pp xxxii, 1007, 2 pages of Publisher’s advertisements, thick 8vo, with 9 folding maps and 2 engraved views.

Findlay had observed that navigators of his time had to consult a considerable number of documents to gather the information they needed to sail the Pacific Ocean safely. Not only was this highly impractical, it also exposed seafarers to conflicting information that could lead to their demise. First published in 1851 this nautical directory, compiled by Findlay from reputable sources, provided seamen with a single comprehensive and authoritative reference work.

Alexander George Findlay (1812 - 1875)

London geographer, chartmaker, publisher and engraver. He worked with John Purdy on compiling charts and sailing directions for Richard Holmes Laurie, taking charge of the firm's hydrographic work on Purdy's death in 1843. Elected to the RGS 8 Jan 1844, proposed by his father, John Arrowsmith and the artist, William Brockedon. He became manager and eventually owner of the Laurie firm in 1858.
