Description:

Rare map showing present day Port Moresby from surveys made in July and August 1886 by Walter R. Guthbertson when the town itself was known as named Granville after the name of the Port.

Guthberston, “I hereby certify on honor, that this survey has been carried out by myself personally, with the theodolite and that the boundaries shewn on the diagram accord with those marked and defined on the ground (Signed) Walter R. Cuthbertson, Surveyor, 9.9.86. Note. All corners are marked by hard wood pegs“.

The first European to sight Port Moresby was Captain John Moresby in 1873, he named it in honour of his father Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby. Granville East was the name given to where the residence of the Governor General was.
