The first printed plan of Port Moresby from surveys made in July and August 1886 Walter R. Guthbertson.
The first European to sight Port Moresby was Captain John Moresby in 1873 he named it in honour of his father Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby. The town itself was originally named Granville commonly known after the name of the Port. Granville East was the name given to where the residence of the Governor General was. Guthberston, “I hereby certify on honor, that this survey has been carried out by myself personally, with the theodolite and that the boundaries shewn on the diagram accord with those marked and defined on the ground (Signed) Walter R. Cuthbertson, Surveyor, 9.9.86. Note. All corners are marked by hard wood pegs”.
