Description:

Rare map of the Ida Lease, Palmer River Gold Field, Queensland.

The Ida Lease was situated on a gentle rise one mile north by east of Maytown, the official and commercial head quarters of the Palmer River Gold Field.

The prospectus of the Ida Gold Mining Company, was in issued in September, 1886 and the aims of the company was to acquire and operate the well-known Ida gold mine in Maytown, Palmer River, North Queensland. It stated that the mine had yielded 13,246 ounces of gold from 7,099 tons of stone, with the gold valued at £4 2s 6d per ounce. The vendors have great confidence in the property and are not accepting cash for it. Instead, they will receive 50,000 paid-up shares in the company for their interest. The remaining 50,000 shares are offered to the public at 3d on application and 3d on allotment. The prospectus states that there is no anticipation of making calls for additional funds, as there is machinery on the field, and early dividends can be expected. Attached to the report are a mining warden report by Mr. W. O. Hodgkinson, presented to the Queensland Parliament in 1883, and a recent report by Mr. Harboard, both of which speak highly of the Ida mine. Mr. H. Courtney of 74 Castlereagh Street is the Sydney broker.
