Large scale c.19th hand coloured finely engraved up to date world map on Mercator’s Projection dated 1810.

The charting of Australia is shown only three years after the published accounts of Nicholas Baudin’s epic voyage of discovery in the ships the Naturalist, Geographe and Casuarina were published in 1807 which contained the first printed chart of Australia. The map of Australia contained in Baudin’s accounts was also printed by Poirson who had access to a number of French voyages that returned from explorations in the Pacific and Australia.

Jean Baptiste Poirson (1760 - 1831)

Poirson was a talented geographer & engraver known for the production of magnificent, very large globes, claimed to be the best since those of Coronelli. He also compiled a large number of maps
