Description:

View of Port Moresby printed in 1887 soon after New Guinea became a British protectorate.

Scarce. c.19th hand coloured engraving of Port Moresby.

The first European to sight Port Moresby was Captain John Moresby in 1873 he named it in honour of his father Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby. The town itself was originally named Granville commonly known after the name of the Port. Granville East was the name given to where the residence of the Governor General Guthberston. The area on which the city was founded was first sighted in 1873 by Captain John Moresby and named in honour of his father Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby.

William Hatherell (1855 - 1928)

Painter born in London and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell's, who sent him to Australia as one of the main artists for Picturesque Australia, as well as The Graphic and other American magazines.
