Description:

The 11th century Tale of Genji that was parodied by Ryutei Tanehiko (1783-1842) in his serial novel ‘Nise Murasaki, Inaka Genjii’, (False Murasaki, Rustic Genji), with Mitsu-uji substituted for Prince Genji and all the other characters slightly changed. Here Mitsu-uji has escaped to an old temple where he can woo his beloved Tasogare by moonlight. Her mother tracks them down, though, intending to frighten them by pretending to be a demon. Mitsu-uji wears a kimono with a Genji pattern that alludes to Chapter 4 of the original text, where Genji takes Yagao to his country estate, where she is frightened to death by a spirit. Inset: Tasogare’s mother, Shinonome with a demon mask in her teeth. From the series Setsugekka. ‘Snow, Moon, Flowers&quot.’
