The scene is based on the scene from the 17th century play, ‘Toryu Oguri Hangan’, originally by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, where Oguri Hangan, is reunited with his beloved where he had been searching for stolen family treasures in Yokoyama. His fiancee Princess Terute, had been abducted, lost at sea and rescued and was now working as a maid in the house of a wealthy rice merchant. When the merchant’s daughter who also loved Hangan, tries to kill Terute, the merchant’s wife kills her daughter, who then becomes a demon that attacks and disfigures Hangan. Terute then takes her injured lover to the healing waterfalls of Nachi, where he recovers. Inset: Nachi waterfall. From the series Setsugekka. ‘Snow, Moon,Flowers’.
