Rare c.19th hand coloured engraving of St Peter’s College, Adelaide.

St Peter’s College was established in 1847 by the Anglican Church of South Australia as a school for boys. The college was initially conducted in temporary premises before moving to its present site at Hackney, north-east of Adelaide, where the principal school buildings were progressively erected. The principal early building was designed by the architect Edmund Wright in the Gothic Revival style and was completed in 1854. During the later c.19th the college expanded considerably, with additional buildings and improvements to the grounds reflecting its growing enrolment and importance as one of South Australia’s leading educational institutions. The engraving records the appearance of the college in 1881, including the principal school buildings and landscaped grounds.
