Description:

Rare c.19th hand coloured engraving of the swing bridge over the Latrobe River, near Sale, Victoria, depicting the bridge and surrounding landscape.

The bridge was designed by the engineer John Grainger and built in 1883. Measuring 45 metres in length, it was the first movable bridge constructed in Victoria. The bridge swung on cylindrical steel columns, allowing vessels to pass along the river when the span was opened.

Albert Charles Cooke (1836 - 1902)

Cooke was a painter, engraver, draughtsman and illustrator. Throughout his career he worked for many of the Illustrated newspapers, such as the Illustrated Sydney News, Illustrated Australian News, The Australasian Sketcher and The Leader. He was also well known for a series of birds eye views of a number of Australian cities and towns.
