Description:

Detailed map of Antarctica with recent discoveries up to and including Shackleton’s 1915-16 but there is note stating, ‘Aeroplane 1929’, which refers to the first official flight to the arctic. At lower left is a chronological table of the voyages of exploration into the region. Numerous explorers tracks are also marked. At top left is another colour key of ‘Progress of Exploration’.

A tender for airmail services to the Arctic closed June 7th, 1929 but was not signed until November 25th. Once the contract for Airmail Service to the Mackenzie River District was awarded to Commercial Airways Ltd., of Edmonton Alberta plans were soon in place.  All the mail for these flights was carried by train from Edmonton to Waterways on November 26th and the First Flight Covers were pre-canceled at Edmonton dated November 26th.

At lower left is a chronological table of the voyages of exploration into the region. Numerous explorers tracks are also marked. At top left is another colour key of ‘Progress of Exploration’.

London geographical
publisher, globe maker, and founder of the firm George Philip & Son.
He started business in 1834 in Liverpool and from about 1848 he traded
as “George Philip & Son” with his son and successor George Phillip
II (1823-1902. Philip retired 1 July 1879 and the business was continued
by his son and nephew.
