Rare, early c.19th hand coloured engraved view Port Louis, Mauritius when it was called Port Napolean.
The engraving is from the very rare set of twenty six views by George Cooke.
From: Cooke, G. Scenery of the East India Islands, etc. A Series of Views of the most Remarkable Localities, celebrated for Picturesque Beauty or Historical and Other Associations. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Browne.
English born engraver Cooke was born in London in 1781 and apprenticed to James Basire (1730-1802). Between 1817 and 1833 he produced, in connection with the nurseryman Conrad Loddiges of Hackney, London a large portion of the plates for, The Botanical Cabinet.
