Rare c.19th photograph of Knapsack Gully Viaduct on the Zig Zag near Emu Plains, at Penrith by Nicholas Caire.

As noted on the paster label on the verso:
The Knapsack Gully Viaduct is situated on the Zig Zag, near Emu Plains, at Penrith. The Viaduct spans the Gully from the Lapstone Hill to the Knapsack, and is so named in consequence of its having been constructed by convict labour, i.e., knapsack men.

Nicholas John Caire (1837 - 1918)

Caire arrived in Australia in 1858 & began his photographic career with Duryea, the flamboyant American photographer. Moved to Victoria 1869 & bought Chuck’s studio in the Royal Arcade in Bourke St where his trade flourished. He is best remember for his great body of work which is of real historic & artistic merit. He was always more interested in Indulging his passion for photography rather than the business side & consequently didn’t enjoy great prosperity.
