Scarce Viennese book of Viennese sketches from the Middle Ages, 1836, 16mo, engraved frontispiece, ill. 68pp.
There is a description of the construction of Vienna’s Spinnerin am Kreuz (1375) located in Favoriten, south of central Vienna. The construction and naming of the spider cross on Wienerberg. The second section describes the bakeries in Vienna and the Narrenkotter. The Narrenkotter existed from 1547-1710 it was in a small room in front of the fish fountain where cages in which troublemakers, drunkards, prostitutes and (from 1568) magicians and fortune tellers were temporarily locked up, exposed to public ridicule or “fooled” by the people. From 1616 the Narrenkotter was only used as a lime magazine and disappeared in 1710 when the fish fountain house was rebuilt. The third section describes folk customs, ceremonies and entries.
