Frank A. McNeill (fl. c. 1905 - 1935)

Professional photographer active in Adelaide, South Australia, during the early decades of the c.20th. Operating from studios in Gawler Place and later trading as Frank A. McNeill Studios, Adelaide & Port, he specialised in formal portraiture and large-format group photographs, particularly sporting teams, schools, clubs, military units and civic organisations.

McNeill established a reputation as one of Adelaide’s leading photographers of Australian Rules football. His photographs document numerous South Australian Football League, South Australian Football Association and amateur football clubs, including Sturt, Prospect, Underdale and representative South Australian teams. His carefully composed gelatin silver photographs, usually mounted on printed card with players and officials identified beneath the image, provide an invaluable visual record of South Australian football during the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s.

Beyond sporting subjects, McNeill also produced high-quality studio portraits and commercial photography. Surviving examples bearing the imprint “Frank A. McNeill Studios, Adelaide & Port” demonstrate that his business maintained studios serving both the city and the Port Adelaide district. His work is represented in public and private collections, including the State Library of South Australia and local historical collections, and is valued both for its photographic quality and its importance as a documentary record of South Australian social and sporting history.
