One of the leading commercial map publishers in Victorian London. Working from premises at 174 Strand, he established a business that specialised in inexpensive, practical maps for travellers, tourists and the rapidly expanding urban population. His publications combined clear engraving, regular revision and affordable prices, helping to popularise printed maps among a broad public rather than the limited audience of government surveyors and wealthy collectors.
Reynolds began publishing maps in the 1840s, producing detailed plans of London that were frequently updated to record the city’s rapid expansion. His maps incorporated new streets, railways, public buildings and suburban development, making them among the most useful guides to Victorian London. They were commonly issued folded in cloth covers and accompanied by street indexes, visitors’ guides and information on omnibus and tram routes.
Among his best-known publications is Reynolds’ Shilling Coloured Map of London, first issued in the mid-nineteenth century and repeatedly revised into the early twentieth century. Sold for one shilling, it became one of the most successful popular maps of the capital. The map’s combination of hand-coloured districts, comprehensive street coverage and practical reference material made it an indispensable companion for residents and visitors alike.
Following James Reynolds’ death in 1877, the firm continued as James Reynolds & Sons, maintaining the Strand premises and publishing revised editions of its London maps, county maps, railway guides and educational atlases well into the twentieth century. The company’s maps remain valued today as detailed records of London’s urban development during the Victorian and Edwardian periods
