Painter, art teacher and explorer born in Nova Scotia between 1843 and 1845. He was raised and educated in the United Kingdom, joining the navy in his teens. Arrived in New Zealand from Victoria, Australia in early 1863, newly-married, with his wife Rosa Clara Wilson. They had 10 children. Resident in Invercargill, corner Dee and Duke Streets, until 1891 when he moved to Christchurch. Travelled and painted extensively in Fiordland. Was one of the first to walk the Milford Track in 1889 and his wife was the first woman to complete the track in 1890.
