Antique Maps of South America

This category brings together original antique maps of South America, spanning four centuries of European cartographic engagement with the continent from the earliest printed maps of the 16th century through to the detailed surveys of the 19th. These works document the progressive geographic understanding of a continent that captivated European cartographers, explorers and scholars from the moment of its first encounter with the wider world.

The earliest antique maps of South America reflect the extraordinary circumstances of 16th-century discovery. Portuguese and Spanish navigators established the outlines of the continent within decades of Columbus’s first voyage, and the major cartographic publishers of Europe — Ortelius, Mercator, de Bry and their contemporaries — incorporated this knowledge into printed maps that circulated across the continent. These early maps combine geographic observation with decorative embellishment, featuring sea monsters, cartouches, wind roses and the ornamental conventions that define the finest period of decorative cartography.

Through the 17th and 18th centuries, antique maps of South America grew progressively more accurate as coastal surveys, interior exploration and the systematic observation of missionaries and colonial administrators added to geographic knowledge. The river systems of the Amazon and the Plate, the Andean mountain chain, the Pampas and Patagonia were mapped with increasing precision, while individual countries and regions — Brazil, Peru, Chile, the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata — became subjects of dedicated cartographic treatment.

The 19th century brought the transition from decorative to scientific cartography, with the surveys conducted under newly independent South American governments and by European scientific expeditions — notably those of Alexander von Humboldt — producing maps of unprecedented accuracy and detail. These later antique maps capture the continent at a moment of political transformation and economic development, documenting the emergence of the modern nations of South America from their colonial origins.

Antique maps of South America are collected for their geographic interest, their documentary importance and the decorative quality that characterises the best examples from the 16th to 18th centuries. As original period works, they offer collectors a direct connection to the history of cartographic knowledge and the European understanding of the Western Hemisphere.
